One woman was killed an another was hospitalized in a crash on Interstate 10 in the Cabazon/Whitewater area Tuesday.
According to California Highway Patrol officers on scene, the 79-year-old driver was headed east on I-10 at around 9:20 a.m., when she somehow drifted into the dirt center divider, and then slammed into-- causing her to go over-- the guard rail.
The 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier landed on its roof, killing the elderly female driver, and injuring her passenger. That woman, also in her 70s, was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center for minor injuries, according to CHP and Cal Fire crews.
Both women were wearing seatbelts when the car flipped, CHP said.
The second woman has since been identified as 74-year-old Marlene Carlson from Alberta, Canada. The driver was only identified as an Alta Loma resident.
The crash happened about two miles west of Haugen-Lehmann Way, and had traffic backed up in the westbound lanes for about three hours.
