Palm Desert Man Accused in DUI Hit, Run Crash

A 26-year-old Palm Desert man was arrested Friday for allegedly driving into the path of another vehicle while intoxicated, then leaving, Riverside County sheriff's officials said.

The crash was reported about 11:15 p.m. Thursday near Monterey Avenue and Fred Waring Drive in Palm Desert.

A Chrysler Sebring driven by Jose Ruben Herrera was traveling north on Monterey "when the driver turned left into the Westfield Mall into the path of a Nissan Pathfinder," and the Pathfinder struck the side of the Sebring, according to sheriff's Sgt. Patrick Carroll.

Herrera allegedly left the area without stopping, and he and the car were later found at an apartment complex at Fred Waring and Town Center Way.

Alcohol was believed to be a factor in the crash, the sergeant said.

Herrera was arrested shortly after midnight and booked into the county jail in Indio, where he later posted a $2,500 bond, according to jail records.

Anyone who may have seen the crash was asked to call deputies at (760) 836-1600, reference case T14 044 0153.
