Palm Desert Police Announce DUI Checkpoint

A DUI checkpoint will be held in town this weekend, sheriff's officials announced Monday.

Palm Desert drivers may be temporarily tied up in a DUI/driver's license checkpoint if they're out Friday night, since an operation is planned in the area.

A checkpoint has been scheduled for Friday, May 10, at an undisclosed location within the city, according to sheriff's Sergeant Dave Adams.  It will run from 9 p.m. Friday through 3 a.m. Saturday.

"In an effort to reduce the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol involved crashes, DUI checkpoints are conducted to identify offenders and get them off the street, as well as educate the public on the dangers of impaired driving," Adams said in a press release.

According to Adams, the sheriff's department publicizes the operations ahead of time, in an effort to deter drivers from drinking and driving.

"Research shows that crashes involving alcohol drop by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted often enough," he said.
