A man suspected of stabbing two women in front of their children was later shot and critically wounded during a struggle with a sheriff's deputy, a sheriff's spokesman said Sunday.
Dispatchers received a 911 call at 9:16 p.m. Saturday from one of the kids, who said "my mom got stabbed" at a house in the 84-500 block of Avenue 52 in Coachella, Riverside County sheriff's Deputy Armando Munoz said.
As paramedics tended the two cut women, deputies combed the neighborhood looking for the man who reportedly cut them, later identified as Saul Gonzalez, 22, of Coachella.
More than an hour after the assault was reported, deputies found Gonzalez in the 84-700 block of Avenue 52, where he allegedly attacked one deputy and tried to grab his gun, Munoz said.
Two other deputies then shot Gonzalez. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
Back at the house, the first victim was taken to a hospital where she was treated for serious injuries and showed stable life signs. Deputies were not sure Sunday whether the second woman was seriously injured.
None of the children who had been inside the Avenue 52 home were hurt, Munoz said.
The deputies involved in the shooting were not injured, Munoz said, and have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation into the shootings.
Charges of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon will be sought against Gonzalez, Munoz said.
