Police Seek Hit and Run Driver Who Slammed Into La Quinta Cyclist

A bicycle rider was hit while riding along Washington Street, near Avenue 48, according to the sheriff's department.

Area police are asking for the public's help in finding the driver of a sedan that hit a bicycle rider in La Quinta, then drove off.

Riverside County Sheriff's Sergeant Tony Baur says the cyclist was riding south on Washington Street, near Avenue 48, around 11 p.m. Sunday night when a passing car side-swiped him.

"The collision caused the cyclist to be thrown from his bicycle," Baur said.

At that point, the driver apparently stopped "momentarily"-- but then fled the accident scene, the sergeant said.

"The cyclist sustained moderate injuries from the collision and sought medical treatment from a local hospital," he said.

The suspect vehicle is described as a dark colored sedan, and likely has damage on the right side from the collision, according to Baur.

Anyone who may have witnessed the accident was asked to contact the sheriff's department at 760-863-8990.
