UPDATED: Hiker Rescued At Living Desert Preserve

The hiker was about two miles in on a walking trail at Living Desert Preserve when they started having breathing problems.

UPDATE 12:15 p.m.: The hiker, an elderly adult male, has been rescued from a trail at the Living Desert Preserve, a fire department spokeswoman said.

The eldery man was hiking alone on the trail, but as firefighters reached him he was being assisted by two employees of the preserve, Hagemann said.

The man will be transported to a local hospital due to complaints of dizziness.

UPDATE 11:25 a.m.: Firefighters will be able to walk the patient out. Therefore, the helicopter rescue was canceled, according to Cal Fire/ Riverside County Fire Department Spokeswoman Jody Hagemann.

A rescue effort was underway Saturday morning to bring medical aid to a downed hiker at the Living Desert Preserve, fire officials said.

As of 11:07 a.m., the hiker was about two miles in on a walking trail in steep, rocky terrain when they started having breathing trouble. A helicopter was being brought in to perform a hoist rescue, said Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department Spokeswoman Jody Hagemann.

Hagemann said they received the initial call about the downed hiker at about 10:39 a.m. Sixteen firefighters and one engine have responded to the preserve, located at 47900 Portola Avenue.
