Sheriff’s Department Out In Force for Start of School
First day of school across the Coachella Valley brings out the Sheriff's Department to enforce traffic laws in school zones.
Drivers are being reminded of the start of school not just by students heading to and from classes, but by increased police activity in school zones.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s department will be watching traffic laws closely in school zones in Palm Desert, La Quinta, Rancho Mirage
and Indian Wells.
“The goal of this program is to educate the motoring public and to reduce speeds in school zones, “ according to Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. Mike Bianco said. “Additionally the program will educate that enhance the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists.”

The speed limit in a school zone with children present is 25
miles per hour. Children walking to and from school must use the
designated crosswalks and bicyclists must obey the rules of the road. All bicyclists under age 18 must wear a helmet, according to the sheriff's department.
