Traffic Alert: Expect Lane Closures on Monterey Ave between Fred Waring and Gran Via Thursday and Friday

Road work means there will be lane closures on Monterey Avenue between Fred Waring Drive and Gran Via from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday Sept. 5 and Friday Sept. 6, a Palm Desert spokesman said Wednesday.

There will also be lane closures on westbound Fred Waring from Monterey to San Pascual from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday Sept. 6, according to city spokesman David Hermann.

"Roadwork around Monterey Avenue and Fred Waring Drive is entering its final phases with finish paving scheduled for Thursday and Friday, September 5 and 6," Hermann said in an announcement.

"On Thursday, workers will be paving outside lanes on Monterey Avenue from Fred Waring to Gran Via. During a portion of the work, left turns from southbound Monterey into College of the Desert and onto Magnesia Falls Drive will not be possible and motorists will need to find alternate routes," Hermann said.

"Also on Thursday, workers will be paving the outside lane of westbound Fred Waring Drive from the McCallum Theatre entrance to Monterey Avenue," Hermann said. "Westbound traffic in this area will be reduced to one lane."

Paving of Monterey's inside lanes is scheduled Friday, Hermann said. Also Friday, westbound Fred Waring from San Pascual to just west of San Pablo will be repaved reducing westbound traffic on Fred Waring to one lane.

"Significant delays on Monterey Avenue are expected in both directions on both days," Hermann said. "Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes such as Portola Avenue and Bob Hope Drive. Westbound traffic on Fred Waring can use Highway 111, where major repaving is now complete, as an alternate route."
