Tree Fire Along I-10 in Indio

Smoky fire occurs near the Jefferson Street interchange.

Flames charred tamarisk trees along Interstate 10 and the transcontinental railroad tracks in Indio on Saturday, a spokesman said.

The smoky fire was reported at 7:19 a.m. in the thick trees, near the Jefferson Street interchange on the city's northwest side.

Firefighters contained the blaze within an hour, Riverside County Fire Department spokesman Mark Annas said, but they were to remain there for several hours to prevent any rekindling.
