A hiker from Arizona went on a walk alone in Martinez Canyon in Thermal and became lost, found huddling near a campfire New Year’s Eve.
The 50-year-old man went on the trail about 10:30 a.m. Sunday for a six-hour hike but failed to return to his pickup point on Highway 74, near Pinyon Pines, at the appointed time.
California Highway Patrol air crews, the county Mountain Rescue Unit, sheriff’s search and rescue and a sheriff’s aircraft searched for them, who was found New Year’s Eve about 6:15 p.m., Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. Robert Castro said.
He was airlifted out of the canyon about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday and evaluated, then reunited with family members, Castro wrote in a news release.
The man refused any further medical treatment.
Sheriff’s deputies, once again, remind hikers to come prepared, with food, cell phones, maps, proper clothing, plenty of water and a navigation system
