Two Fatally Injured When Teen Driver Crashes Stolen Car on Dillon Road

Two people were fatally injured Tuesday afternoon when a teen driver crashed a stolen Hyundai sedan on Dillon Road south of Berdoo Canyon, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.

The 2013 Hyundai Genesis was reportedly stolen in Indio between 6:30 p.m. Nov. 25 and 6:30 a.m. Nov. 26, according to CHP Officer Mike Radford.

Five people were in the car when it crashed about 4 p.m. Tuesday on Dillon south of Berdoo Canyon Road, Radford said.

The driver, a 16-year-old boy from Indio, "admitted to traveling between 85 and 100 miles per hour before losing control of the Hyundai," Radford said.

The Hyundai was southbound on Dillon when it struck a dirt berm on the east side of the road and overturned multiple times, Radford said. Three passengers were ejected.

Andres Romo, 18, of La Quinta, was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased, coroner's officials said. Another male, name and age unknown, was pronounced dead at the scene, Radford said.

"The two other passengers sustained major injuries and the driver sustained minor injuries," Radford said. "The driver was arrested and will be facing charges of vehicular manslaughter."

One of the injured who survived the crash is a 17-year-old girl from Indio, Radford said. The driver's name was not released.
