UPDATE: Elderly Man Named in Postal Annex Crash

California Highway Patrol officers are investigating what caused a vehicle, driven by a 74-year-old man, to crash through the Palm Desert business.

California Highway Patrol officers are investigating what caused a 74-year-old man to crash his vehicle through the front of a Postal Annex store in Palm Desert early Wednesday.

The incident was reported at 9:38 a.m. March 13. CHP officials said Carlos Echevarria, of Indio, was driving a 2009 Mercedes Benz C300 into a parking stall directly in front of the Postal Annex store, in a shopping center at the corner of Washington Street and Varner Road, when the vehicle accelerated.

The Mercedes crashed through the front of the Postal Annex and come to rest inside the store, CHP officials said.

At the time of the collision, 64-year-old Jane Cook, from Indio, was riding in the right front seat. She was not injured. Echevarria suffered minor injuries was taken to Eisenhower Medical Center, CHP officials said.

Two employees in the store at the time of the crash were uninjured, officials said.

The cause of this collision is still under investigation but alcohol and /or drugs are not factors, officers said.
