Woman Accused of DUI, Crashing into Tree at Chaparral Country Club

A Palm Desert woman was arrested Tuesday evening and accused of driving under the influence when her vehicle went through several yards and crashed into a tree inside the gated grounds of Chaparral Country Club, according to the Sheriff's Department.

The single vehicle crash was reported about 8 p.m. Jan. 21 in the area of Conejo Circle and Chaparral Drive, Sgt. Andy Martinez of the sheriff's Palm Desert Station said in a statement.

"This investigation revealed that the driver, identified as Billie Jo Sorenson, 79 years old of Palm Desert, failed to negotiate a turn, drove onto several residential yards and collided with a tree," Martinez said.

Sorenson was allegedly intoxicated during the crash and she was arrested, Martinez said.

Sorenson was booked late Tuesday at Smith Correctional in Banning on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to inmate records. She was cited and released on $2,500 bail Wednesday morning. She has a court date in April.
