A woman was found dead of an assault and a suspect -- reportedly an acquaintance of hers -- was behind bars in Indio Thursday, authorities said.
The murder was reported at about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in the 85000 block of Middleton Street, in Thermal.
Riverside County sheriff's deputies were called to the home to investigate the report of unknown trouble, according to sheriff's Sgt. Jim Erickson.
They found the woman's remains and called in homicide investigators, the sergeant stated in a news release.
Investigators shortly after that found a man near the home and arrested him on suspicion of murder.
Raul Sanchez Jr. 32, was booked into the Indio Jail, authorities said.
He was being held in lieu of $1 million, pending a first court appearance Tuesday, sheriff's records indicate.
The investigation was continuing and anyone with information was asked to call homicide investigators at 760-393-3500 or Thermal Station investigators at 760-836-1600.
