Bono Mack Renews Fight on Prescription Drug Abuse

Our local Representative echos her call for better regulation in the effort to curb prescription drug abuse in America.

Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (R-Palm Springs) has again called for decisive action to combat prescription drug abuse in America.  The co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on Prescription Drug Abuse, she made the comment today at the first National Summit on Prescription Drug Abuse, in Orlando.

“I have made combating prescription drug abuse a top priority,” Bono Mack said.   “I believe there needs to be a national awakening about the threat this alarming epidemic poses to our families and our communities.”

The comments echo similar statements the Representative made recently at a prescription drug abuse town-hall meeting in Rancho Mirage.

“We need to educate more parents and families,” Bono Mack said in her speech.  “Visit more schools. Warn more kids about the dangers of abuse and addiction.  Prod more reporters to write more stories.  Urge more physicians an prescribers to join our fight.  And demand more action from all of our elected officials.  If we’re not successful, American will continue to be a nation constantly in mourning.”

Bono Mack has introduced two bills, The Ryan Creedon Act and the Stop Oxy Abuse Act, which aim to educate prescribers and monitor and limit access to prescription drugs containing controlled-release oxycodone hydrochloride, including the powerful painkiller OxyContin.
