Bump and Grind Gate Still There

Two other less sturdy gates have been ripped out in the past.

A gate barring hikers from entering the upper Bump and Grind Trail is still there, according to the Department of Fish and Game.

"Staff went up today and it's still there with no damage,'' said Andrew Hughan, a DFG spokesman.

Two previous attempts to install gates to block off the trail were met with resistance, as they were torn down.

The much sturdier gate, which was Monday morning, closes the trail as it crosses into the protected Magnesia Spring and Carrizo Canyon Ecological Preserve.

The DFG has said the closure is needed to protect a sensitive lambing area for the Peninsular bighorn sheep.

Any hikers that are caught in the area could face a misdemeanor, fines and up to a year in jail, according to Hughan.

Local hikers have opposed the closure. Read about their efforts to keep it open .
