County Board of Supervisors to Meet in Palm Desert Oct. 1

The Riverside County Board of Supervisors plans to meet in the Coachella Valley on Oct. 1, staff for Board Chairman John J. Benoit announced Thursday.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday Oct. 1 at the Coachella Valley Water District's Steve Robbins Administration Building in Palm Desert, 75-515 Hovley Lane East.

Here's part of a news release from Benoit's staff:

It is the first regularly scheduled board meeting to be held outside Riverside since the passage of legislation in 2011 that gives county supervisors greater flexibility to hold off-site meetings. Board meetings are typically held in the county seat, and Riverside County hasn’t held a regular meeting outside Riverside in recent memory.

"Bringing the Board of Supervisors to the Coachella Valley makes county government more accessible to people who live and work at least an hour’s drive from Riverside," Benoit said. "In my service as chairman, I am pleased to hold this rare and exciting meeting which we're watching closely as a case study for possible future meetings in outlying areas."

County staff will determine whether streaming and videoconferencing can be made available on Oct. 1. If both can be accomplished, anybody with an Internet connection could watch the Oct. 1 meeting online. The public could go to Palm Desert to comment in person or to the board chambers in Riverside, 4080 Lemon St., to watch the meeting and comment via teleconference.

The Riverside County Board of Supervisors holds its regular meetings in Riverside at the County Administrative Center.
