Distance Learning Bill Passes State Legislature

Assemblyman Brian Nestande, R-Palm Desert, introduced the legislation.

Assembly Bill 851 -- introduced by Assemblyman Brian Nestande, R-Palm Desert, to advance distance learning -- passed the Assembly Floor with unanimous support Wednesday.

"During these tough budget times, we need to pursue innovative solutions such as distance learning that increase educational opportunities for students at a lower cost," Nestande said.

According to Nestande, AB 851 establishes a common definition of "distance learning course." The law aims to help California's public postsecondary institutions better collaborate.
