State Oversight Hearing on Mecca

This Friday the State Assembly’s Committee on Environmental Safety & Toxic Materials will conduct an oversight hearing at Desert Mirage High School in Thermal to inquire into the unpermitted hazardous waste disposal at Western Environmental, Inc. that has sickened residents of the town of Mecca.

All are encouraged to attend. The hearing will be conducted in English with simultaneous translation into Spanish.  For those in need of transportation to the hearing, shuttles will pick up from Saul Martinez Elementary at 2:15 and 2:45 p.m. and from Mecca Elementary at 2:25 and 2:55 p.m.  Child care will be available adjacent to the hearing room.

On the morning of the hearing, Assemblymember Pérez and the visiting Committee members will participate in an East Coachella Valley "Unhealthy Communities" Bus Tour organized by California Rural Legal Assistance (CRLA).  The tour will visit several sites in proximity to Mecca and Thermal and is intended to educate community representatives, enforcement officials, and members of the media about these local threats to human health and the environment.  The tour begins at 10 a.m. and space is limited.  Participation must be confirmed by a CRLA staff member.
