Free Household Hazardous Waste Collection Saturday Nov. 23 at Pinyon Flats

Free household hazardous waste collection is scheduled this Saturday in Pinyon Flats, south of Highway 74 between Palm Desert and Mountain Center, Riverside County Waste Management Department officials announced Tuesday.

The collection at Pinyon Flats Transfer Station is open to all Riverside County residents and is slated for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 23.

County officials say the collection is an opportunity for residents "to keep hazardous waste out of the county landfills and ensure that it is properly managed."

Waste management personnel at Pinyon Flats Transfer Station will accept "residentially generated household hazardous wastes from Riverside County residents only," county officials said.

Business or non-profit waste will not be accepted.

"Typical wastes include used motor oil, paint, antifreeze, household and automotive batteries, pesticides, cleaning products, sharps (needles/syringes or lancets), fluorescent lamps, and electronic wastes such as televisions, computers, VCRs and telephones," county officials said.

"Limit the amount of waste transported to no more than 15 gallons or 125 pounds maximum per vehicle.  Individual containers should be no larger than five gallons or weigh more than 50 pounds," county officials said.

Waste management personnel at Pinyon Flats Transfer Station will not accept explosives, radioactives, ammunition, asbestos, compressed gas cylinders over 40 pounds, and infectious or medical waste other than sharps, county officials said.

The event "is subject to cancellation during inclement weather or for other hazardous conditions as determined by the county," Department of Waste Management officials said.

Pinyon Flats Transfer Station is on South Pinyon Flats Road. County officials offer two ways to get there:
- From I-10 in the Coachella Valley, take the Monterey Avenue south which becomes the "Palms to Pines Highway" (Hwy 74). Continue on State Highway 74 south bound then up into the mountains. Once the crest has been reached, pass the Fire Station and turn south onto Pinyon Flats Road. Enter event at end of road.

From Highway 74 in Pinyon Pines area, turn south on Pinyon Flats Road, just west of the Fire Station at the crest of the hill. Enter event at end of road.
