Nestande Bill Would Help Save Non-Profits Money

"Not only would this bill save non-profits money, it does not cost the state money but also streamlines state tax law with the federal government," Nestande said in a statement.

Proposed legislation by Assemblyman Brian Nestande, R-Palm Desert, would make it easier for non-profit organizations to file taxes.

Assembly Bill 1677, which Nestande introduced on Feb. 14, seeks to amend California tax law for the non-profits and allow them to automatically conform to the federal limits "regarding the amount of gross receipts required for filing either the 'postcard' or the long tax forms," Nestande said.

"Not only would this bill save non-profits money, it does not cost the state money but also streamlines state tax law with the federal government."

He added that the simpler process would save money that would otherwise go to pay a tax accountant and use it to further their good cause.

AB 1677 is sponsored by the Navy League of the United States Palm Springs Council.

"By streamlining the tax law and filing requirements we can ensure more of our money is used for charitable purposes," said President Peter Knaust, Navy League of the United States Palm Springs Council. "It is my hope the legislature sees the need for this bill and passes it."
