Palm Desert Eyes Golfers To Help With Valley Homeless

The program would ask golfers at the Desert Willow Golf Resort to give $1 to Roy's Desert Resource Center.

Palm Desert plans to join Indian Wells in a program that encourages golfers to donate $1 when out on the greens to help the homeless at Roy’s Desert Resource Center.

“They need all the money they can get,’’ Mayor Jean Benson said of the proposed program.

City Manager John M. Wohlmuth told council members on Thursday that he met with Indian Wells city officials about their program, which encourages golfers to give $1 when they are at the Indian Wells Country Club and the Indian Wells Golf Resort.

Wohlmuth said that Palm Desert's public course -- Desert Willow Golf Resort  -- is willing to participate as long as the city provides some publicity.

“It’s voluntary,’’ Wohlmuth said, adding that he hopes to get the program in place by May 15.

He said this year’s program will be a trial run.

“After this trial period, we will inform the council of its success and perhaps meet with the chamber and see how many others would like to participate,’’ Wohlmuth said.
