Palm Desert Mayor Jean Benson 'Comfortable' With State Of City

The mayor made the remark at the Palm Desert Chamber of Commerce's third annual State of the City & Chamber luncheon at the Desert Willow Golf Resort.

Palm Desert has tried to stay ahead of the curve in the face of the economic downturn, Mayor Jean Benson said Wednesday.

Benson, who spoke to Patch.com at the Palm Desert Chamber of Commerce’s third annual State of the City luncheon, said the city’s reserve fund has grown from $48 million to $63 million over the past five years “without cutting any city services.’’

“We recognize the economic downturn has impacted people, but the city has tried to stay ahead of the curve,’’ Benson said. “We are very comfortable with the state that Palm Desert is in.’’

The mayor acknowledged the city has reduced staff through retirement and some layoffs. Palm Desert also has a hiring freeze.

“We still have major programs going,’’ she said, adding that city officials abide by a 1973 philosophy.

“We pay as we grow,’’ Benson said. “Every accomplishment the city has had is completely paid for.

City Council members Jan Harnik, Bill Kroonen, Cindy Finerty and Bob Spiegel also attended, along with City Manager John Wohlmuth.

The luncheon, which attracted more than 200 attendees, was held in the recently renovated area of the .
