POLL: Bilingual Voting Services

The comments have been flying on a story about bilingual poll workers being needed. What do you think?

Editor's Note:  This article was originally published on May 30, but has been brought to the front page again, since the discussion continues on the topic. Original story below:

In a about bilingual poll workers being needed, comments have been flying over the topic of multi-language government services.

In 1988, California made English the official language for government services. But a strong Spanish-speaking population is calling for more services in their native tongue to serve those with limited English abilities.

So should voting sites have bilingual services?

Seems like an oxymoron...but you don't have to be fluent in English to be naturalized...

Requirements for US Citizenship include ...
"Be able to read, write, and speak English and have knowledge and an understanding of U.S. history and government" I would say that means that you are required to be fluent in English. That being said, NO political Voting process should include bilingual materials or media, and especially not to single just one language above all the others that are spoken in this country. It is more intelligent to have everyone be fluent in English than it is to cater to all the different languages.

Bob.. I knew a Vietnamese woman who proudly showed me her US citizenship certificate...she spoke probably 5 words of English...3 of which were "pick your color"...so much for being fluent....better check that before you post...

Abslutely agree 100% and I will not press 1 for English while I am on the subject. What next are we going to have our ballots in every language like applying for a driver's license which again is a total waste of our tax dollars?

Just because we political correctness has weakened our resolve to enforce our laws, does not mean they don't exist. A lot of my friends had parents and grandparents who spoke italian or german at home, but were proficient in reading and speaking English. Indeed they were proud of their English abilities..

@B.K.-- Thank you for your help with the community :) I have a great respect for all teachers!

You';re welcome, Renee but I don't really expect thanks for my contributions to the classroom. IRead More wasn't going to stand by and see kids not have the basic things they needed to get through the class and most teachers are of the same mind :) Sadly, school budgets have never covered all the needs in classrooms.
