Rep. Ruiz Votes for Violence Against Women Act, Speaking in Palm Desert

Ruiz, D-Palm Desert, will speak about the legislation on Friday at a news conference with local community leaders and elected officials at Palm Desert's Shelter From The Storm.

Rep. Raul Ruiz Thursday voted for the Violence Against Women Act and will discuss the legislation -- of which he spoke in favor in his first House floor speech -- in Palm Desert Friday, his spokeswoman said.

The Violence Against Women Act passed the House of Representatives and U.S. Senate and will go to President Obama for his signature.

Ruiz, D-Palm Desert, will speak about the legislation on Friday at a news conference with local community leaders and elected officials at Palm Desert's Shelter From The Storm, which aids victims of domestic violence, according to Ruiz spokeswoman Whitney Mitchell said.

Shelter staff, local mayors and police chiefs, representatives from the Morongo Band of Mission Indians, Girl Scouts and the National Organization for Women and Riverside County Sexual Assault Services staff are expected to attend the 10:30 a.m. event.

The bill provides stronger protections for women and strengthens the ability of the federal government, the states, law enforcement and service providers to fight domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking, according to Ruiz's office.

In his first speech on the floor of the House on Wednesday, Ruiz said that as an emergency room doctor, "I have seen firsthand the beaten and bruised bodies of women and the invisible scars left on the victim, her family and community."

"Native American women in my district and across the country endure an epidemic of domestic violence and in most cases the abusers are not members of the tribe," he said. "Tribes must have the right to protect their daughters, sisters and mothers from violence."

You';re welcome, Renee but I don't really expect thanks for my contributions to the classroom. IRead More wasn't going to stand by and see kids not have the basic things they needed to get through the class and most teachers are of the same mind :) Sadly, school budgets have never covered all the needs in classrooms.

Dorothy you actually believe criminals can't get guns without a background check. Wow are youRead More naive. Just because YOU don't understand why some people want a particular weapon...does not mean you can impose your ownership standards on someone else. Suppose I suggest you don't need the particular car you drive or the particlar beverage you drink? I see you are opposed to hunting. How do you feel about abortion? Typical liberal double standard at play here??

Totally agree. This is just the beginning of a gun grab. All it will accomplish is furtherRead More restrictions on law abiding citizens. Chicago is a perfect example. Strictest gun control in the nation and highest gun crime and murder rate. Criminals do not comply with the law. Only legal citizens will lose their rights to own the weapon of their choice. Liberals are all about choice when it comes to killing an unborn, but when it comes to a lawful gunowner's choice it's a different story altogether.
