Sheriff's Rate Hike Hits PD Lighter Than Expected

The city had planned for a bigger hike in Sheriff's contract rates than was approved by the County on Tuesday.

In the aftermath of a rate hike for Riverside County Sheriff's services for the City of Palm Desert, the city is actually coming out as a winner.

Budgeted figures for the last three years and actual costs are below:

Fiscal year 2010/2011 – $16,339,096 (actual cost was $15,543,543)

Fiscal year 2011/2012 – $16,647,638 (actual costs unknown until after the end of the fiscal year – after June 30)

Fiscal year 2012/2013 – $16,568,261 (proposed amount that has yet to be approved by the City Council)

According to City spokesmans David Hermann, the city planned for a 3% increase for fiscal 2011/12.  The new rates, effectively a 1% increase for Palm Desert, should end up saving the city money for that year, and result in the ability to lower the law enforcement budget for 2012/2013.

"We were once again anticipating a greater increase in the contract rate this year and budgeted accordingly," Hermann told Patch. "So in that context the 1% increase is better than we expected."
