Aztecs kick off 2012 season Friday night; polls give little respect to PD

The Palm Desert High football team is ready to start the 2012 campaign tomorrow night against Desert Valley League Champion Palm Springs, but the preseason polls give the Aztecs little respect.

The CIF-Southern Section has the Aztecs outside of the top 10 in their pre-season Central Division poll, released today.  According to the CIF, the defending Division champion, Palm Springs, ranks no better then 8th in the preseason list. The Indians are the only DVL team to make the top 10 poll in the Division.

The website MaxPreps lists Palm Desert at 18th in the 32 team Central Division, behind DVL foes Palm Springs (5th) and La Quinta (10th).

The Aztecs return most of last year's high-octane offense that averaged 36 points a game during the 9-game regular season in 2011.

Palm Desert starts the season Friday night at Palm Springs in the annual "Mercury Bowl" in a non-league contest for both teams.  Kickoff at Ralph Watt Stadium is set for 7:00 p.m.
