Boys and Girls Club Names Top Valley Readers
The program ran from late June to mid-August, with the winner logging 73.5 hours of reading.
When 12-year-old Justin Rodriquez signed up for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Coachella Valley summer reading program, little did he know how much time it would take to claim top prize.
Rodriguez, who is going into seventh grade at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Indio, logged 73.5 hours of reading during the program this summer, according to organizer Alex Altman.
He was among 52 other students honored last week from across the Coachella Valley, including Palm Desert's Jenna Pelham.

Quinton Egson, chief professional officer of BGCofCV, said the program is important to help keep local kids sharp.
"Studies show that when kids take the summer off from school, it can take two or three months for them to refocus and get caught up. This program helps keep them up to speed,” he said.
