DSUSD to Send Layoff Notices

Up to 130 jobs may be lost over the next few months, with no specifics on which schools are being impacted the hardest.

The Desert Sands Unified School District will be laying off about 130 employees in the next few months. 

The Board of Education unanimously voted to send layoff notices to 70 teachers and counselors by May 15. 

The board also voted 4-1, to send notices to 62 staff employees that their positions may be eliminated this summer.

“We can’t buy things with money we don’t have,” said board President Donald Griffth prior to the votes. “So it’s a frustrating thing for us too and we will do the best we can to make the cuts as soft as possible.” 

There is no word on how many jobs in Palm Desert schools will be lost.

The DSUSD, which is facing a $7.5 million shortage for the 2012-13 school year, serves Palm Desert, La Quinta and Indio.
