College of the Desert Communication Building Dedication

PALM DESERT, CA—Staff members, faculty, VIPs from the community, and College
of the Desert (COD) leaders will gather Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 10 a.m. to celebrate the
groundbreaking of another new building at COD.

The new structure, currently referred to as the Communication Building, will be the
new home of all classes related to language studies and humanities, as well as adjunct
faculty space for instructors in these disciplines. It will also include regular classrooms
and four state-of-the-art computer classrooms. This building is located across the
courtyard from the Cravens Student Services Center.

Site preparation has already begun on the 35,500 square foot building, which is one
of several Phase One projects paid for by a $346.5 million bond issue approved by
Coachella Valley voters in 2004. The purpose of the bond measure is to update the
facilities on the aging campus for decades to come. By law, bond proceeds can only be
used for facilities. They cannot be used to help offset the more recent state budget cuts
to operations. The structure will cost an estimated $17.3 million to build. The estimated
project completion date is Spring 2013.

Naming opportunities will be available in the Communication Building at a variety of
giving levels. These include the building itself, as well as the interior classrooms, offices,
conference rooms, etc. Please contact the COD Foundation office at (760) 773-2561 for
more information.

The groundbreaking will be held on the Palm Desert campus, just across Alumni Road
from the construction site, which is accessed by the entrance to COD off of Monterey
Avenue. The brief ceremony, with remarks from COD President Jerry Patton and a
ceremonial shovel and hard hat photo, will last about 30 minutes under a tented area
near the site. Guests are advised to park in lot 19 adjacent to the site north of the
Monterey entrance.
