Neighbors Upset Over Palm Desert High Mural

Some residents in the gated Lantana community call a mural at Palm Desert High "an eyesore"

Some residents of a gated community west of Palm Desert High School are upset over a mural on the east side of the campus.

A recently painted banner-like sign reading "Aztec Pride" has been painted across the 3rd floor of the school's gymnasium. But some residents of the adjacent Lantana community area calling it an Aztec problem.

"That's kind of an eyesore, basically," Palm Desert resident John Stenmoen told KESQ television.  "It's big. If you look at it, that's all you see, Aztec pride. Nothing against the school, it's just a large sign, kind of an eye sore," Stenmoen said.

"It didn't belong facing us. I think it should have been facing Fred Waring, where nobody would have been affected by it," Palm Desert resident Marvin Paul said in the same interview.

The sign faces the adjacent Palm Desert High baseball and softball fields.

The Lantana Homeowners Association told KESQ they have a petition with over 150 names that they will present to the Desert Sands Unified School District asking that the sign be removed.

A Patch investigation showed that the sign is most visible from the public streets directly west from of the sign.  The Lantana community lies more southwest of the sign.

The photo map shows the location of the Lantana Homeowners in relation to Palm Desert high, as well as the location where Patch took its photo on Moss Rose.  The photo site is the the closest on Moss Rose that the sign is visible on a public street.
