In the fall of 2013, The Jewish Community School of the Desert will become a STEM magnet school.

The following was submitted for publication on behalf of the Jewish Community School of the Desert:

The Jewish Community School of the Desert (JCSD) answers a nationwide challenge - how to promote creative thinking skills while instilling a passion for a lifelong learning in its elementary school students.

In the fall of 2013, JCSD will become a STEM magnet school. The STEM initiative uses science, technology, engineering and mathematics as the central theme in the classroom.

Students will learn elements of genetics, geology, space science, botany, zoology, Lego robotics and technology while focusing on skills such as team work, synthesizing information, analyzing ideas, independent thinking, problem solving and decision making.  The other subjects such as reading, social studies, art, music, physical education and languages are taught in a new context and focus on the core themes.

"The faculty at JCSD believes that this program will help our students acquire the '21st century skills'. Our students will to not only be adaptive, but also innovative, creative, self-directed and self-motivated," said Principal Miri Ketayi.

JCSD will continue to offer enrichment classes such as chess, music, art, drama, PE and Spanish along with our core curriculum classes. Children of all faiths are welcomed to attend JCSD.

Parents interested in learning more about the school and its new STEM curriculum should contact the Jewish Community School of the Desert at 760-340-2039.
