Palm Desert Student Advances To Finals Of State Geographic Bee

Paul Kalish has a chance to represent California in the national finals in Washington D.C.

seventh grader Paul Kalish will join a select few next week when he competes in Sacramento for the 2011 California Geographic Bee.

“We are thrilled to know that one of our own students has qualified for this prestigious competition,’’ said PDCMS Principal Sallie Fraser. “Paul won our school Geo Bee as well as the Desert Sands Unified School District bee. We are sure he will continue to impress at the state level.”

If Paul wins, he will receive $100, the “Complete National Geographic” on DVD and a trip to Washington D.C., where he will represent California in the national finals at the National Geographic Society headquarters in May.

The national winner will receive a $25,000 scholarship and travel with a parent or guardian to the Galapagos Islands.

The winners of regional competitions took a qualifying test, which was submitted to the National Geographic Society.
