VIDEO: Parents, Teachers Ask If Students In A 'Race To Nowhere'

Discussion follows documentary screened at Palm Desert Charter Middle School Thursday night.

About 100 students, parents and teachers gathered to watch a documentary Thursday that asks if students are too stressed in school.

The film, “Race to Nowhere,’’ was put on by a Parent Teacher Organization group at .

The film was created by a mom – Vicki Abeles – after she began noticing how stress was impacting her three children, and a 13-year-old girl committed suicide in her community. Now’s she advocating for less homework and teaching that emphasizes learning and not test taking.

That message resonated with attendees.

Afterwards, seventh grader Sophie Allen said she often feels stressed about her homework.

“I thought I was the only kid really going through it until I saw this video,’’ she said.
