UCR Palm Desert Faces Cuts

The extension campus needs to cut up to 8 percent of its budget under a plan released Tuesday.

The impact of a $46 million shortfall at UC Riverside will trickle down to the university's graduate center in Palm Desert, according to officials.

The UCR Palm Desert Graduate Center will have to cut up to 8 percent of its budget, or nearly $150,000, according to MyDesert.com.

Assistant Vice Chancellor James Grant told the website that the difference will be made up by charging community groups more to use the school's buildings.

No layoffs were expected to take place at the Palm Desert campus, Grant said.

The comments came as UCR Chancellor Timothy White said Tuesday that major spending reductions would be necessary for the university to close its 2011-12 fiscal year gap.

That follows a roughly $1 billion cut to the UC system in the state budget signed earlier this month by Gov. Jerry Brown.
