Azarenka Reigns Over Indian Wells

The top two women's players met in a rematch of the Australian Open finals, which Azarenka also won handily.

Victoria Azarenka maintained her perfect season by winning the women's singles title at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells Sunday.

The World No. 1 player flummoxed No. 2 Maria Sharapova for the second time this season, 6-2, 6-3.

"I was really actually nervous before the final, you know," Azarenka said. "I knew Maria played some excellent tennis this week. She's always very tough opponent to play."

Sharapova took the responsibility for the loss.

"I still feel like I just made too many unforced errors at the wrong time and wasn't solid enough," Sharapova said.

The top two women's players met in a rematch of the Australian Open finals, which Azarenka also won handily.

"She's going through a period in her career where she's extremely confident, extremely solid," Sharapova said.

The 22-year-old Azarenka adds her Indian Wells trophy to a growing collection this season that include triumphs in Sydney, Doha and the Australian Open.

Including her final appearances at the end of the 2011 season, Azarenka has now reached six straight finals.

She shrugged off pressure to maintain her perfect season.

"I'm not thinking too much ahead, that, you know, I'm No. 1, I have to continue winning or something," she said. "I'm just trying to be the best player and the best person I can be on every single day."

Azarenka now holds a 5-3 edge over the 24-year-old Russian in head-to-head meetings, and has won all four of their matches in finals in straight sets.
