Aztecs Win DVL Baseball Title

Brian Serven pitches strong and homers as the Aztecs win the DVL for 4th straight season.

All season, the Palm Desert Aztecs made winning the Desert Valley league their mission.

Thanks to junior Brian Serven, its ‘mission accomplished’.

Serven threw a four-hit shutout, and added a solo home run as Palm Desert beat La Quinta 5-0 to secure the DVL title for the 4th straight season.

“We’ve been getting stronger as the season went on.” Coach Darol Salazar said following the game. “The early part was tough when the basketball kids weren’t swinging the bats well, but now we’ve found our stride.”

With the CIF Division 4 playoffs beginning next week, it’s a perfect time for Palm Desert to be on stride.   The Aztecs will enter the playoffs as the #1 seed.

Serven was in form all night long, scattering four hits while striking out seven, including six of the final eight outs.

La Quinta’s best scoring opportunity came in the fifth, when the Blackhawks loaded the bases, before Serven struck out #4 hitter Jordan Panster to end the inning.

“I had to bear down a bit then,” Serven said following the game.  “I had to reach to throw a bit harder.”

Serven, the Aztec clean up hitter, was effective off the mound as well, going 3-4 with a solo home run and two RBI off La Quinta’s Trevor Abshire.

The Aztecs finish the season at home on Thursday in the return game with La Quinta; then they await the playoff pairings to be released on Monday.
