Major Amateur Boxing Event Starts Today

"Desert Showdown" brings amateur fighters from around the world.

Fantasy Springs Resort Casino this week will host what's billed as the second-largest amateur boxing tournament in the country.

The 11th annual Desert Showdown World Amateur Boxing Championships will
be held at the casino's special events center today through Saturday. The
tournament, which is sanctioned by USA Boxing, will showcase the top amateurs "not only from the U.S., but from around the world,'' casino spokeswoman Anndee Laskoe said.

The tournament will feature more than 1,000 boxers in four rings, with
160 fights each day, she said.
