Longtime Los Angeles Dodgers announcer Vin Scully will be the guest speaker Tuesday at an Indian Wells fundraiser benefiting the Barbara Sinatra Children's Center.
Scully will address the center's Uncles Club during its annual "Sports Luncheon" at the Hyatt Indian Wells Resort and Spa. He is expected to discuss his career and the team's prospects for the 2013 season during his appearance before the Uncles Club, which is charging $88 per seat at the fundraiser.
Each member of the Uncles Club donates $1,000 annually to the center, which Frank Sinatra and his wife founded in 1986.
The center, located at the Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, provides counseling and other services to abused children and their families.
The 85-year-old Scully has been a Dodger announcer since 1950 when the team was located in Brooklyn.
Scully's many honors include the Ford C. Frick Award, presented annually by the Baseball Hall of Fame to a broadcaster for "major contributions to baseball" and being named as the greatest sportscaster by the American Sportscasters Association.
A ranking system devised by author Curt Smith for his 2005 book "Voices of the Game" determined that Scully was baseball's greatest announcer, giving him a perfect score of 100, based on such factors as longevity, language, popularity and persona.
"He is the Babe Ruth of our industry. Period. End of story," said Charley Steiner, the Dodgers' radio play-by-play announcer, said last year.
"He is to sportscasting what The Beatles were to music. You could argue who is the second greatest group of all time, you can argue who's the second greatest baseball broadcaster of all time, but case closed on The Beatles and Vin."
