Keeping Up With Bruce Jenner

Jenner won Olympic Gold in the Decathlon event 30 years ago in Montreal. Now, he's "Dad" to the most famous show business family, The Kardashians, and enjoys time away from Hollywood playing the links in Palm Desert.

Bruce Jenner became "The World's Greatest Athlete" in the Summer Games at the 1976 Olympics at Montreal. Jenner won the most grueling of events, the decathlon, where athletes perform 10 events over two days.

Because of the variety of strength required to compete in the decathlon (events include throwing, running, and jumping) the winner is traditionally thought of as the most fit man in the world at that time. Jenner not only won the decathlon, but he broke the world record by amassing 8,618 points in the various events.

Today, Jenner is known for another "gold medal" title. He is the step father to the famed Kardashian sisters and their brother Rob, plus he has two daughters with their mother Krys Kardashian, his wife of 20 years.

(Jenner has four other children with previous wives and is father to Brody Jenner, the reality TV star from "The Hills.") Jenner stars with his famous family in TV's more successful reality show franchise, "Keeping Up With The Kardashians" and is frequently seen in the melee between daughters, brother, and mom.

"That's why they invented golf," Jenner has said of having squabbling but very famous progeny in the house all the time. Jenner is seen as a devoted Dad, although somewhat outnumbered on the TV series, but in the end he has said: "We all love each other and are a normal family."

Before all the success with the Kardashian franchise, Jenner was a major figure in the motivational speaking world and would motivate people and young athletes around the world to better themselves and compete at a high level.

Jenner won the decathlon not because he was the best at any one event, but because of his overall consistency in the the ten events that make up the competition. Consistency is something Bruce Jenner has been preaching ever since this amazing accomplishment in his life took him to the cover of one of the most famous Wheaties cereal boxes.

For relaxation and time away from the spotlight, Jenner enjoys spending time in Palm Desert with his wife Krys and has played in several golf tournaments at clubs in the Palm Desert area such as Eldorado Country Club and The Troon.

"Jenner is very competitive on the green," notes fellow golfer Joseph Schrage, President of Glendale Infiniti car dealership and who has played with Jenner in several tournaments.

"Even if he (Jenner) hadn't won the Gold Medal at the Olympics this guy would be considered a top level 'club golfer.' His tee off percentages show the guy's not here to just kill an afternoon ... he means business," Schrage said.

Jenner finds time to relax in Palm Desert in his home here in the desert.

"I have seen Bruce Jenner really find a home away from home here in the desert," said Palm Springs resident and graphic artist Siouxzan Perry, who designed a web site for Jenner several years ago. "I don't relate to Bruce Jenner as the father of the Kardashians or as an athlete really. I know him to be one of the nicest clients I've ever had."

"You don't know the real Bruce Jenner until you see him in a Hawaiian shirt," noted Perry, laughing.

Jenner keeps very fit and uses time in the desert to get plenty of workouts in.

"Bruce (Jenner) doesn't just golf when he comes to the desert, he uses the time to really concentrate on total body conditioning. I've seen the guy stay on the elliptical machine for what seems like two hours. He takes meetings on that machine," Sage said.

Typical behavior for the World's Greatest Athlete, I suppose.
