Local Youth Football Prepares For Upcoming Season

A long running youth program, PDLQ football gears up for another season.

When someone mentions youth sports, most minds immediately jump to AYSO soccer or Little League Baseball.

But pre-high school youngsters who enjoy football have few options. This is where PDLQ football has been making a difference.

Now in its 20th year, the season is set to begin anew.

PDLQ serves the Palm Desert and La Quinta communities and offers full contact tackle football for youths aged 7 to 14.

“We aim for those that primarily want to go on to play football in high school,” said Vanessa Mazza, the PDLQ Chapter AD. “It’s pretty much the only option for football before high school.”

But it’s not just for those kids who aspire to play football at the prep level.  PDLQ has also offered a cheer program. The status of the cheer program hasn’t been decided for this season.

Five different levels exist in the football program, to keep players with similar ages and weights together. Team practices under trained coaches start in early August, with a full season of Saturday games beginning just after Labor Day. Last year, PDLQ teams travelled as far as Corona in the regular season.

The PDLQ umbrella reaches beyond Palm Desert and La Quinta; they have accepted youths from as far as Cathedral City and Indio in their fall program.
