Meet Olympic Swimmer Janet Evans at PD Aquatic Center This Weekend

Palm Desert's aquatic center will host the world record-holder who will sign autographs on Saturday, Nov. 3.

Olympic swimming gold medalist Janet Evans will make an appearance in Palm Desert on Saturday, a city spokesman said Tuesday.

Evans, a former world champion swimmer who won gold medals for the United States at the 1988 and 1992 Olympics, will be at the Palm Desert Aquatic Center from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

"Evans will be sharing her story, signing autographs,and displaying her Olympic medals," city spokesman David Hermann said.

The free event is organized by YMCA of the Desert, Hermann said.

Evans won five Olympic medals, four of them gold, and 45 American titles. In 1987, the Orange County native broke world records in the 400-meter, 800-meter and 1,500-meter freestyle events. She won three individual gold medals in those events at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.
