Palm Desert Track Stars Shine at Start of DVL Finals

The Saints and Aztecs look strong in field events.

Day one of the 2011 Desert Valley League track and field finals focused on the field events, and preliminary races in the track events. 

Over 50 competitors from the seven DVL schools were involved in the finals for discus, shot put, high jump and long jump. 

senior Nick Donohue took top honors in the boys high jump, leaping an even 6- feet.  La Quinta senior Brigette Rowe won the girls high jump (5 foot 3 inches), besting Palm Desert’s Alex Blaylock.

senior Armando Ceja-Luis won the boys discus event with a throw of 147 feet 11.5 inches.

He beat Coachella Valley’s Moises Ramos’ best throw by over four feet. Mariela Salazar of Indio earned top honors in the girls discus at 105 feet, 4 inches. Xavier Prep senior Autumn Pavao finished second.

Ramos got revenge in the shot put with a toss of 49 feet 8.25 inches, beating Ceja-Luis by two and a half feet. Indio’s Sherice Wright won the girls shot put with a heave of 34 feet, 9.5 inches.

Freshman Alejandro Angulo of Cathedral City was the winner in the girls long jump with a leap of 16 feet three and a half inches; more than a foot and a half over her nearest challenger. Nephi Garcia from Palm Springs went 21 feet 1.5 inches to win the boys’ competition.

Finals in the track events will take place Thursday at Palm Springs High School.
