PD Boy's Basketball Puts Away Cathedral City

But Aztec coach Don Brady is upset at the team's performance in DVL win Friday.

The Palm Desert boy's basketball rode senior guard Jonathan Serven and junior forward Robert Romero shooting touch Friday to beat visiting Cathedral City 68-49.

Yet, as the buzzer sounded and Palm Desert had won, Aztec coach Don Brady slammed down his clipboard, visibly showing frustration.

“We didn’t box out at all, we kept letting them hit open three pointers,” Brady said. “We focused on defense at practice, and we didn’t execute.”

The Aztecs had sloppy ball handling in the first half, took poor shots and seemed to lack attention at times. The Cathedral City Lions drilled eight 3-point shots on the night, few under any defensive pressure.

Despite holding a nine point lead at the half, Brady was on his feet, yelling at the players throughout much of the game.

Cathedral City came out quickly in the second half, hitting two uncontested shots from long range in the first minute, cutting the PD lead to five points.  The Aztecs answered with a 14 point run over the next four minutes (seven of those points from Serven) that the visitors did not recover from.

Serven finished with a game high of 32 points, while Romero scored 16 in his return to action after being out due to injury.

“We have to get better,” Coach Brady said after the game. “We’ve got La Quinta on Tuesday, and the number eight (ranked) team in the nation here on Monday. We just have to get better.”

The Monday game with national powerhouse Mater Dei High School may prove to be dangerous for Palm Desert (11-7, 4-1 DVL), who will have less than 24 hours to recuperate before Tuesday’s DVL match up at La Quinta.
