PD Softball Powers to CIF Wild Card Win

Aztec girls turn to offense in wild card win to advance to Division 4 main draw.

The Palm Desert Lady Aztecs came out swinging on Tuesday, using the long ball to help themselves to a 17-2 road win against Woodcrest Christian/Riverside.

“We’ve been up and down,” Aztec head coach Steve Leonhard told Patch.com. “But today we were an offensive buzzsaw.”

Aztec sophomore right fielder Katie Drake set the tone early, hitting a home run on the third pitch of the game. From there, Palm Desert was hitting virtually everything Woodcrest Christian threw at them.

Senior 1B Alissa Hernandez was 3-5, scoring three times and driving in two.

Pitcher Alisson Brown was in top form in the pitcher’s circle, allowing just five hits and two runs over six innings of work. Brown didn’t get any strikeouts, but more importantly, didn’t allow a walk.

“She wasn’t overpowering,” Leonhard said, “but she was getting them to just put the ball in play.”

The sophomore pitcher helped her own cause with a big day at the plate, slugging two homeruns, driving in 5, and scoring three runs in the Aztec
win.

Palm Desert (14-13), faces a tough task on Thursday, opening the CIF Division 4 first round at San Dimas High.  San Dimas won the Valle Vista League with a solid 20-7 record.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:15.
