BLOG: Aztecs Shut Out In CIF Finals At Dodger Stadium

Palm Desert High School sought back-to-back CIF Championships against Bishop Amat.

Aztec senior Ryan Clark - pinch hitting for Brooks Kriske - strikes out to end the game. Amat players are piling on each other at the pitchers mound, while the Aztecs look on.

UPDATE: 6:21 p.m.

Bishop Amat junior pitcher Danny Zamora leaves the game with two outs in the 7th to a standing ovation form the Lancer fans. Senior David Berg comes in for what Bishop Amat fans hope will be the final out.

UPDATE: 6:18 p.m.

Palm Desert manages to keep the Lancers quiet in the 7th. Fans are on thier feet as the bottom of the 7th is coming. Bishop Amat fans are feeling a title coming their way, while Aztec fans are praying for more last inning heroics. Halkovich, Dave Schuknecht and Kriske due up for PD.

Mid 7th: Bishop amat 7, Palm Desert 0

UPDATE: 6:13 p.m.

Top 7th:  Aztec CF Ryan Garvey moves to first base, playing the same position his father did with the Dodgers.

UPDATE: 6:06 p.m.

OOOHS from the crowd on a deep fly to right by Ryan Garvey, but it was easily caught on the warning track. That was the best hit ball of the day - aside from Garvey's first inning double. The Aztecs are known for late inning comebacks.

End 6:  Bishop Amat 7, Palm Desert 0

UPDATE 6:03 p.m.

Amat threatens in the 6th, but a key double play gets Palm Desert out of the inning unharmed. Aztec big guns are coming up in the 6th (Burcham, Garvey, Dave Schuknecht).

Middle 6th: Bishop Amat 7, Palm Desert 0

UPDATE: 5:54 p.m.

Aztecs get the lead runner on with a walk, then go quietly. Palm Desert need some late inning magic ... and they need it now.

Through 5th: Bishop Amat 7, Palm Desert 0

UPDATE: 5:47 p.m.

Aztec's Jono Tellier gets rocked. Jono gives up a walk, a single, and then a two out triple to Bishop Amat's Jay Anderson. Tellier then commits a fielding error to let Anderson score. Three runs across. The Amat fans are starting to celebrate with beach balls in the stands.   

Middle 5th:  Bishop Amat 7, Palm Desert 0

UPDATE: 5:38 p.m.

Heading to Amat 5th, Brooks Kriske's day is done. Jono Tellier comes in as relief for the Aztecs.

UPDATE: 5:37 p.m.

Aztec bats need to wake up. In the fourth inning, nothing hit out of the infield. Three up, three down.

Through four at Dodger Stadium: Bishop Amat 4, Palm Desert 0

UPDATE: 5:31 p.m.

Amat is at it again and two more runs are in. Kriske appear rattled. Behind the first base dugout, the Amat fans are chanting "Here we go, Amat, here we go."  A good sized Aztec crowd along third base hasn't had much to cheer about yet.

Middle 4th: Bishop Amat 4, Palm Desert 0

UPDATE: 5:23 p.m.

Amat 4th: Palm Desert's Kriske issues his fourth walk in just over three innings. He's not as sharp as usual, but no action in the Aztec bullpen. 

UPDATE: 5:18 p.m.

For the Aztecs, the double play bug has bit. A one-out single from Scotty Burcham is wasted as Ryan Garvey hits into the 6-3 inning ender.  

Through 3 innings: Bishop Amat 2, Palm Desert 0

UPDATE: 5:13 p.m.

Amat draws first blood with a two run homer. Rio Ruiz with a towering shot down the right field line after  Kriske gives up a one out walk.  

Middle 3rd: Bishop Amat 2, Palm Desert 0

UPDATE: 5:09 p.m.

Aztecs load the bases with one out on two hits and a walk, only to have #9 hitter Jono Tellier hit back to the pitcher for an inning ending double play. The Aztec bottom of the order has been red hot lately. Let's hope this missed opportunity isn't costly. Through 2 innings, PD 0, Amat 0.

UPDATE: 4:56 p.m.

Bishop Amat threatened with a walk and a two out single, before Brooks Kriske notched his third strikeout of the game. Aztecs and Lancers still scoreless heading to the Palm Desert second.

UPDATE: 4:47 p.m.

Aztecs Ryan Garvey -- son of Dodger great Steve Garvey -- is gunned down at home trying to advance on a two out error. Garvey hit a two out double to left center, but got thrown out trying to advance on a bobble by the Lancers 2B off the bat of John Schuknecht.

No score through one inning.

UPDATE: 4:37 p.m.

Amat goes down easily in the first. Just a two out walk to show for their efforts. No score between Palm Desert and Amat, through half inning.

UPDATE: 4:31 p.m.

Aztec junior Brooks Kriske (13-1, 1.77 ERA) is on the hill for PD. And here we go, the CIF Championship game is underway!

It's a warm, but hazy day in LA -- perfect for the CIF-Southern Section-Ford Baseball Championships. Former Dodger manger Tommy Lasorda just gave a rousing pep talk to the Aztecs before they take the field against Bishop Amat.

The Palm Desert Aztecs defend their CIF Baseball title today, as the top seeded Aztecs face #2 seed Bishop Amat at Dodger Stadium. 

Aztec ace junior Brooks Kriske will be on the mound for Palm Desert, who is the designated home team today. The Lancers will counter with junior right hander  Daniel Zamora (8-1, 1.62 ERA).
