Seom of the nation's top fencers will compete this Saturday, at College of the Desert’s Wright Gymnasium.
At the Summer National Championships, held at the Anaheim Convention Center June 29 to July 8, fencers from COD found themselves on the award podium. Costa Nichols, who was the gold medalist last year, competed in veteran men's saber and took 3rd and the bronze medal. COD Fencing Coach Leslie Taft competed in veteran women's epee and saber and took 3rd in epee and 5th in saber. COD’s Glenn King, director of Network Services and Telecommunications, competed in veteran men's epee and his son, Danny, competed in the under 16 men's epee. This was their first National Championship.
Taft stated, “College of the Desert, and its fencers are now well-known and respected in the arena of fencing National Championships.” College of the Desert and the fencers swept this season's awards as the top fencing team in the division with our fencers taking first place in all areas, men's and women's foil, saber and epee, plus team events, to be the #1 team in the division this 2011-2012 season.
The first fencing tournament for the 2012-2013 season begins at 9:30 a.m. with saber, followed by foil at 10:30 a.m. and epee at 12:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
