Weekend High School Sports Recap

CIF competition was not kind to most Palm Desert High teams; local wrestlers have eye on state championships.

The Palm Desert girls soccer team stood out as the lone winner in a week full of CIF playoff losses.

The Lady Aztecs defeated Rialto Carter 1-0 on Thursday, earning a second round home match with Grace Brethren of Simi Valley. The Lady Lancers won the Frontier League, losing just once this season.  Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m.  Tuesday at Aztec Field.

The Desert Valley league as a whole did very well, with Palm Springs, Coachella Valley and La Quinta also advancing in Division 5.

DVL champions Palm Springs continue to play well, winning their second round game Friday night in Division 3A; edging Arroyo Grande, 49-48.  The Indians advance to the 3A quarter finals, facing La Habra Sonora on Tuesday.

Girls Water Polo: Palm Desert was blown out by Garden Grove Pacifica, 17-1, in the Division 6 opening round, early last week.  DVL rivals La Quinta and Palm Springs both lost their quarterfinal round games Saturday.

Wrestling:  171-pound wrestler Travis Hammer is the lone Palm Desert Aztec in the CIF Masters Meet, while Roy Galvan at 103 pounds will represent Xavier Prep this weekend.

The meet qualifiers and pairings were released Monday.  The two-day event takes place Friday and Saturday, Feb. 25-26 at Temecula Valley High School, with top finishers in each weight class qualifying for the CIF State Meet in Bakersfield.
