Weekend Sports Recap

Last local falls in BNP Paribas Open pre-qualifiers. Five is lucky and unlucky number for PD baseball. Two DVL teams get shot at state basketball title

Indian Wells-based teaching pro Marcin Rozpedski lost in the BNP Paribas Open pre-qualifying quarterfinals to Daniel Kosakowski, 6-4, 6-2. Kosakowski will advance to the final qualifying rounds beginning Tuesday. 

Krista Hardebeck downed Monica Truewicz 6-4, 6-1 to win the ladies pre-qualifier.  Hardebeck advances to the ladies’ main draw qualifier on Monday. 

Baseball:    The Palm Desert Aztecs saw five as a recurring theme in the season opening Newport Elks tournament.  The Aztecs scored 5 in the third inning to beat Bishop Amat 5-1 on their season opener on Friday. On Saturday, Palm Desert gave up 5 in the 5th inning, falling to highly ranked Orange Lutheran.  The Aztecs (1-1) continue the Newport Elks Tournament, traveling to face Esperanza on Monday.

Xavier High struggled in its opening weekend of play. The Saints fell 10-1 to Palm Springs on Friday night, and were soundly beat, 11-1 at Cajon on Saturday.  Xavier (0-2) is off the rest of the week. 

Softball:  The Lady Aztecs stumbled hard out of the blocks, dropping their opening game at Redlands, 10-0 on Friday.   Palm Desert (0-1) takes time to regroup before hosting Ramona on the 14th.

CIF Wrestling:  La Quinta’s George Torres was given the “Pursuing Victory Award”, for winning four matches after losing his opening match in the CIF State Championship Meet. 

CIF Basketball:  Two Desert Valley League teams earned berths in the CIF State Tournament.   The four-time DVL champion Palm Springs boys are seeded #10 in Southern California Division 3, and visit Los Angeles City champs Chatsworth on Tuesday. 

The Indio Lady Rajahs were given the #11 seed in Southern California Division 2. They travel to Westview, the San Diego Section champion, also on Tuesday.
