Weekend Sports Recap

Top Seeds at the BNP Paribas Open are alive and well … mostly. Local HS baseball and softball stumbles, but COD softball rolls strong.

Vera Zvonareva, the 2009 BNP Paribas Open winner, was eliminated in her third round match Sunday. The #3 seed fell to Dominika Cibulkova 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-4.  The rest of the top 8 seeded women are still alive as third round play concludes today.

Most of the top mens seeds survived the first weekend of play at Indian Wells, with the biggest upset so far coming at the hands of unseeded Donald Young.  The American defeated #5 seed Andy Murray in the second round  7-6(4), 6-3.  The third round play for the men starts today.

Baseball:  Palm Desert fell victim to the big inning again on Friday, as Serra Catholic put up a 10-run fifth inning to beat the Aztecs 11-9 at Palm Desert High.  Palm Desert rallied from that 11-1 deficit with 8 runs in the final three innings.  The Aztecs (3-2) travel to Garden Grove to face Rancho Alamitos (4-1) on Wednesday.

The Saints (1-4) now look to avenge a loss last week to Shadow Hills, as the two local schools get together again Monday afternoon.  Desert Valley league play begins later this week for Xavier, with a home-and-home against Coachella Valley.

Softball: Oak Hills scored four times in the first inning and never looked back, beating the Lady Aztecs 4-2 on Saturday.  The PD girls (0-3), will host Ramona High/Riverside on Tuesday.

NCAA basketball:  The desert’s closest NCAA Division I university, UC Riverside, was eliminated in the Big West Conference men’s basketball tournament on Friday. The Highlanders lost to Long Beach State 74-63 in the semifinal round.  It was the second time in 10 days that UCR had fallen to Long Beach. UCR had bested Cal Poly in the opening round, a 70-66 overtime battle.  UC Santa Barbara eventually won the tournament and the automatic bid into the NCAA tournament.
